@Ryan,

Yes, I have heard the audio from the futures pits.

I've also heard the theory that what caused Lehman to finally crash was someone making a large $4.7 million dollar purchase of far out of the money puts in the current month. This caused the put seller to have to hedge in the open market by short selling so many shares that the final plunge to bankruptcy was initiated.

My sense is that someone did know something in each case and they made a huge bet which moved the markets with self fulfilling prophecy.

David,

I am sure you have heard the audio in the S&P future pits that day. I find it interesting how a large... a very large sell order came in right before the "free fall" happened... as if someone knew OR someone purposely drove it down. How one individual/ group could do such a thing... I have my doubts and think otherwise.

Also, dont you find it funny that the S&P Futures got within just a few handles for the limit down kicked in?

Call it a consiparcy or don't, I see it for what it is...
